Safeguarding Policy

Last updated: 07 June 2025

At Kasupe, we are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all individuals who engage with our work—particularly children, young people, and vulnerable adults. This Safeguarding Policy sets out our approach to preventing abuse, protecting individuals, and responding to concerns.

1. Our Commitment

Kasupe believes that:

  • Everyone, regardless of age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation, has the right to protection from abuse and harm.
  • We have a duty of care to safeguard all individuals we come into contact with through our work in the UK and Malawi.
  • We must act responsibly and transparently when safeguarding concerns arise.

2. Who This Policy Applies To

This policy applies to:

  • All Kasupe staff, trustees, and volunteers
  • Partners, contractors, and anyone representing Kasupe
  • Anyone working with children or vulnerable individuals on behalf of Kasupe, in the UK or overseas

3. Definitions

  • Safeguarding: The process of protecting people’s health, wellbeing, and rights, enabling them to live free from abuse and harm.
  • Child: Anyone under the age of 18.
  • Vulnerable adult: A person aged 18 or over who is at risk of abuse or neglect due to age, illness, disability, or other circumstances.

4. Types of Abuse

Abuse can take many forms, including:

  • Physical abuse
  • Emotional or psychological abuse
  • Sexual abuse or exploitation
  • Neglect or failure to act
  • Financial or material abuse
  • Online abuse
  • Discriminatory abuse

5. Safeguarding Practices

Kasupe ensures the following practices are in place:

  • Safe recruitment procedures including DBS checks (for UK roles) and reference checks
  • Clear codes of conduct for all staff, volunteers, and partners
  • Ongoing safeguarding training and awareness
  • Risk assessments for activities involving children or vulnerable individuals
  • Secure data handling and respect for privacy

6. Reporting a Safeguarding Concern

All concerns, suspicions, or disclosures of abuse must be taken seriously and reported immediately. If you see something concerning, or someone reports an incident to you, you must:

1. Stay calm and listen carefully.
2. Avoid asking leading questions.
3. Reassure the person they are right to speak up.
4. Report the concern to Kasupe’s Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
