Meet the Kasupe trustees

Wendy Diddams

Wendy Diddams is a retired Optometrist who spent many years running her own practice in Knutsford. Alongside her professional work, she has been involved in a number of voluntary eye care projects across Africa, and in 2019 helped to organise an eye care trip to Chigonere in Malawi. Wendy has a particular interest in children’s health and well-being, and she is passionate about supporting communities to thrive. She now lives in Marple with her partner John and enjoys walking in the countryside, travelling, and spending precious time with her young grandson.

Colin Jones

Colin Jones is a Dispensing Optician and Contact Lens Optician who runs his own independent practice in Widnes. Originally from Liverpool, he is proud of his roots and a lifelong supporter of his football team. Colin has taken part in several Vision Aid Overseas trips, providing vital eye care and spectacles to communities across Africa. In 2019 he joined a visit to Malawi, where he was inspired by the incredible work Kasupe is doing to support education and community development. Having seen the impact first-hand, Colin felt privileged to be invited to become a Trustee and to help make a difference.

John Hubbard

John Hubbard is a PhD-qualified Chemist and a senior manager at Unilever R&D on the Wirral. He became a Trustee of Kasupe more than two years ago and is passionate about helping children reach their potential through education, particularly in the fields of science and technology. John believes strongly in the power of learning to change lives and is dedicated to supporting Kasupe’s vision for young people in Malawi. He lives in Knutsford with his wife Clare and their two teenage children, and outside of work he enjoys family life, community activities, and encouraging the next generation to explore new ideas. In 2022 John ran the London Marathon in order to raise funds for Kasupe.

Sally Chilakalaka

Sally Chilakalaka works closely alongside her husband Davy, the founder of Kasupe, and plays an active role in guiding the charity’s work in Malawi and the UK. By profession she is an Occupational Therapist, and she brings her skills and caring nature into both her career and her involvement with Kasupe. Sally is deeply committed to seeing children and families flourish, and she combines her professional knowledge with her passion for community support. She and Davy have two children, Peace and Praise, and together they share a vision of building brighter futures through education and opportunity.

Testimonial

“I first heard about Kasupe when, as a local Optometrist in Knutsford, Davy came to visit me for an eye examination. He was already aware that I had a history of volunteering in Africa a number of times and so our conversation quickly turned to what Davy and Sally were doing in Malawi, and I was of course very interested.

I had been on Eye care projects with another charity Vision Aid Overseas, so of course Davy said – why don’t you come to MY village! It was not possible within the framework I had been volunteering, but I knew several other Optometrists who would help, and so in 2019, four Optometrists accompanied Davy and Sally to Chigonere. We provided eye exams and new glasses (which we had made to prescription in the UK ), to schoolchildren, residents, workers and also staff at the local referral hospital Monkey Bay Hospital.

This experience enabled us to see for ourselves the many achievements of Kasupe – the high quality Primary and now Nursery education, the solar powered water pumps, the many projects to help drive towards economic self sufficiency such as mushroom growing, honey production, sewing uniforms for school.

I am now retired from practice, and I hope that my background in a healthcare business alongside experience of working in Africa, including Chigonere will enable me to be a useful trustee, and help realise Davy’s Vision for Kasupe.”
